Buying my first car: The highs and lows of it all I’ve decided to break down my entire experience into FOUR high-level stages and speak to each because they all matter: 1. CONSIDERATION (Deciding o I’ve decided to break down my entire experience into FOUR high-level stages and speak to each because they all matter: 1. CONSIDERATION (Deciding on a model that fits) Payam was full of friendly energy when I walked into the dealership. He warmly introduced himself and made my girlfriend and I feel welcomed. I felt he was listening, trustworthy, we test drove the car and he was ready to help me get everything I wanted or at least as close as possible. He was very helpful and accommodating, showing different models, other car options within my budget and being very willing to put me into my dream car that matched my proposed budget. 2. PRE APPROVAL (Agreeing on a price, payments and completing pre-approval paperwork) When we decided on a final car, Payam was very patient with me, seeing how this was my very first car purchase ever. I ended up spending a couple of hours with him (maybe more) while he went to war for my happiness with his manager; he went the distance! After many conversations, going home, coming back, we finally reached a middle ground with Eli (cool guy!). During that time they offered my girlfriend and I water bottles and ALWAYS gave us time and space to chit chat, deliberate, think and come to decisions. They offered us a great deal and we took it after some great conversation. We spent time with Masoud who drew up the financial documents. Masoud was fabulous. He gave us more details about the vehicle. It felt natural and casual, relaxed and easy working with him. He moved efficiently so that we could enjoy the rest of the day. He was knowledgeable and gave good advice. He’s friendly, funny, and has a kind, relaxed demeanor which was easy to be around. POST APPROVAL (Picking up the car and signing final paperwork) Hooray! Payam called me with the approval and told me to pick up my new car the next day after they’ve prepared it. This was my first car purchase from a dealership, I’m NEW. I’m blind with the process of wrapping up the car. From the approval of the vehicle to the moment I took it away, there seem to be many scrambles: -I had to gather last-minute paperwork for a promotion I received which was not communicated early in the pre-approval stage. Without it, I wouldn’t get the car -I had to pay for some previous outstanding parking tickets or I wouldn’t be able to pick-up the car -For some reason, they got new license plates for me, even after I had a detailed conversation about keeping my old plates the day before -On pick up day, I was told to pickup the car at 4:30pm instead of the 6 pm time I was given the day before or I’d have to wait 3 days later to pick it up. Mind you, I’ve already sold off my old car during this process. -I noticed the car was not impeccably washed. There was residue under the spare tire on the back, water residue stains on the windows, a scuff on the inside passage door, and some stuff all along the inside of the swing door. I was hoping for something very detailed especially since I was approved on a Thursday morning, and was told to pick up the car Friday evening. All of the last minute scramblings really killed my excitement. I did a lot more work than anticipated on my pick-up day and was too exhausted to be thrilled. RETENTION (Appreciating my business, attempts at retaining me as a customer) I was given a gift for my purchase, a mini lawn chair, and recieved a pretty great promotion on my vehicles. I haven’t had to reach out to the dealership yet because its only been 2 days. Payam, Eli, and Masoud were all very inviting and gave me their word that we’d be taken care of if we ever needed anything. Derek, Payam, Masoud and Eli all genuinely congratulated me and saw me off as I pulled off the lot. Hopefully my experience is taken as a learning opportunity to ask more questions to customers to minimize the work for the sales people, the customer and their colleagues at the post-approval stage. If you’re like me (a first time buyer), I’d suggest to come very prepared and ask a lot of questions about the processes: LICENSING: Make sure all of your tickets (parking etc) are paid before even walking into a dealership Bring both your insurance and ownership to your salesperson if you’re transferring old plates DAY OF PICKING UP THE CAR: If you’re working that day, just take the day off incase something last minute comes up. It’ll save you a migraine. CAR WALK AROUND: Look around the car and make sure it’s been groomed to have that new car shine you deserve. ONE PERSON: Let one person be your voice. I feel like somethings were miscommunicated when there were many chefs in the kitchen. Hope this was helpful. I LOVE my car, and I’m grateful to everyone at the dealership for everything they’ve done to help make it happen! More
