Hello Alexandra. I would like to start by extending our condolences. 2020 has been quite the year for so many and we cannot imagine the added stress and grief you, your children, and your family have gone through after losing your husband this summer. I was a bit challenged to find your purchase file. I discovered it was your mother that is actually the owner and insurer of the 2011 Acadia. Back in early October when you and your father test drove the Acadia all seemed fine. That is consistent with the inspection performed by our government licensed technician. However; I think it is fair to understand that a ten (10) year-old vehicle, approaching 200,000 KM could experience maintenance and repairs during its next stage of ownership. Regrettably predicting such events is totally out of anyone’s abilities. The vehicle had long passed its factory warranty and in fact, given its age and mileage, no extended warranty plans were available. We also never implied any extended warranty coverage, due to its age, mileage and purchase price, beyondCarleah’s offer to review any repairs in the first thirty (30) days of ownership - which is consistent with any out-of-warranty used vehicle purchased at Western. As our folks have explained to you, your brother and your boyfriend; we are here to help and assist. We have completed the initial inspection to determine the nature of the failure and we have done this at no-charge to you. It would appear that the timing chain failed with possible bent valves interfering with the crankshaft rotation. However, this can only be confirmed with a partial engine tear-down which we do not recommend as we feel the engine is beyond repair – hence why spend the time and money to determine the exact cause of the failure. For your information, timing chains can fail due to lack of oil. You may have noticed oil drips/leaks and/or excessive blue smoke from the exhaust, especially at start-up and/or under acceleration. Another indicator can be the smell of burnt oil. Your vehicle is equipped with an oil life monitor. Regrettably though, the oil life monitor does not read fluid level. That is something every vehicle owner needs to do on a regular basis – at least once a month – if not more often. Notwithstanding, our initial assessment leads us to believe a timing chain failure, for reasons undetermined, which has caused extensive internal engine damage. As mentioned above, there is no warranty coverage but we are here to help and provide financial assistance. To that end, we would be pleased to assist you by sharing 50/50 in the cost of the necessary repairs, completed at Western, to your Acadia. Given the state of the engine, it is our recommendation that one of the three choices be made. Namely; replace with a used engine (no warranty but lower cost), a rebuilt engine (expected longer life with some possible limited warranty) or a brand-new GM engine (highest price but the longest life expectancy of the three options plus a more encompassing warranty) – all subject to availability. I do not have the exact costs or availabilities of these three choices so I recommend you meet with our Service Manager, Don Fricker, to go over your choices and fully understand the benefits of each option. We commit to you Alexandra, whatever option you select we will do our utmost to keep the costs as low as possible. No one wants the inconvenience of vehicle repairs nor the expenses associated with them. That is why we will be happy to assist you, and your mother to lessen your expenses.
