I bought a 2008 Jeep Patriot from McPhillips Toyota on January 5, 2019. I drove the Jeep for five months and approximately 5,000 kilometers. On July 3rd, I parked it and went out of the country for a mont January 5, 2019. I drove the Jeep for five months and approximately 5,000 kilometers. On July 3rd, I parked it and went out of the country for a month. When I returned, my Jeep would not start. I called a mechanic and had the Jeep towed a shop assuming the battery had gone or the starter was acting up. However I was informed that the problem was not battery or starter related and it could not be diagnosed because the codes displayed on the diagnostic computer in the shop did not match the computer code for the Jeep. The mechanic had also found fire extinguisher residue in the engine bay. The decision was made to tow the Jeep to a Chrysler dealership where a further two hour diagnostic test was performed. After the diagnostic check, I was informed that the problem was with the relay block and wiring harness and that the computer could not be read without repair. The problem was described as multiple wires cut up, mixed up, improperly spliced with heat resistance and that the possibility existed that some cables may be missing from the wiring harness. The wiring harness condition was so bad that it was unrepairable. The Chrysler dealership informed us that the Jeep needed a new wiring harness with a relay block which would cost $1,000 dollars just for the part, and that would not even guarantee the vehicle would start after. The Chrysler dealership recommended we call MPI to look into the possibility of vandalism. We called MPI and the police. MPI sent an adjuster to inspect the Jeep. After finishing the evaluation, the adjuster concluded the damage was not due to vandalism. The adjuster told me that someone previously worked on the Jeep and did a very poor job. I went to McPhillips Toyota with my mother and father and asked to speak with a sales representative about the condition of the Jeeps wiring harness and relay block. First, the salesperson argued that the dealership never did a safety inspection on the vehicle and the vehicle was sold “as is,” but, when we showed him the documents showing that McPhillips, indeed, did do a safety inspection on the Jeep, he said he would try to do something to help me out with this situation. Since the meeting, I have met with a manager who had the Jeep towed to mcphillips Toyota and made it sound like they would try to repair the damage or see if they could help in some other way. However when we got their they had somehow obtained the diagnostic that I had done on my own at Chrysler that I had paid for. Their only offer was to sell me another car around the $ 8,000 dollar range. Can you imagine the impact this would have on a 18 year old student after already spending over $4,000 for the Jeep that does not start? Still to this date, I have not heard from the dealership as regards to remedies that would help me out. I have only heard from Mc Phillips Toyota asking me to remove the Jeep from their Property. They have also alleged that I removed the radio from the vehicle and and I could have been the cause of the problem... I have never installed a radio or any electronic equipment of any kind. I was 18 at the time I purchased the vehicle, going to university full time and working two jobs to save enough to pay for the Jeep, so that I would have a reliable vehicle to drive to the university. Based on our mechanics assessment, fire extinguisher residue was found in the engine bay, indicating a fire had been in the engine bay in the past, probably to put out an electrical fire, which mcphillips Toyota failed to mention. Also, on the assessment of the MPI adjuster the wiring harness was severely damage and was possibly missing wires. It is evident that very little was done to correct the situation while the vehicle was under the control of McPhillips Toyota before it was sold to me. The reason that I had gone to this dealerships is because I thought I would get a fair and honest deal. Based on all the facts I have gathered in this situation, I don’t think I got a fair or honest deal. I am still not satisfied and I feel taken advantage of. More
